GENERAL FIELD SAFETY RULES

1.         Purpose

 

To establish a minimum set of safety rules and dress code requirements for field personnel.  These rules are basic and all OSHA, NIOSH, ANSI and NFPA requirements, though not listed, still apply.

2.         Dress Code

 

            Shirts with sleeves (4" minimum) are required.

 

            Shirts with low necklines or with obscene slogans will not be allowed.

 

            Pants unraveling at the cuff, whereby moving or rotating equipment may catch strips, are prohibited.

 

            Clothing must be kept in good repair without rips, tears or holes.

 

            Athletic wear will not be allowed, for example: sweat pants, shorts, jogging pants, wind suits, or athletic uniform pants.

 

            Shoes that meet the ANSI standards appropriate for an industrial environment are required.  Soft sole, athletic style shoes or others containing material that do not support and protect the foot are prohibited.

 

            Employees with long hair falling below the nape of the neck shall contain the hair in some means or manner.

 

3.         Personal Protective Equipment

 

            Hard hats shall be worn at all times, with bill facing forward.

 

            ANSI approved safety glasses shall be worn at all times.  Employees with prescription safety glasses that do not meet ANSI Z87-41 guidelines will be required to wear cover goggles over their prescription glasses.

 

            Cutting goggles shall be worn during any flame cutting.  Matches and/or lighters shall not be used to ignite a torch; only approved devices.

           

Face shields (in addition to safety glasses) shall be worn when grinding, operating a skill saw, or wire buffing. They will also be worn when cutting with a port-a-band above chest level.

           

Full body harnesses shall be used when working over six (6) feet. It will be equipped with two lanyards to achieve 100% tie off.

 

            Chemical goggles (monogoggles) and face shields shall be worn when using solvents, corrosive acids or hazardous chemicals, which could cause damage to the eyes.

 

            Gloves are required to be worn at all times. Certain jobs where gloves cannot be worn, you will be allowed to take them off.

 

            Good hygiene should be practiced.

 

            If you bring your own P.P.E., it must be inspected by J-G before you use it on this project.

 

4.         Housekeeping

 

            Secure all material and equipment before leaving your work area.

 

            Never place cords/leads/material on stairs or in walkways.

 

            Good housekeeping practices shall be exercised during all phases of your work.

 

            The rule “if you mess it up, you clean it up” applies at all times including the break area.

 

5.         Ladders and Scaffolding

 

            Ladders shall be used for access to elevated work areas.

 

            Extension ladders shall extend three (3) feet above landing and be tied off at all times.

 

            Never work from the top two steps of a step ladder.

 

            Scaffolds shall be built according to OSHA specifications.

 

            Step ladders are never to be used as straight ladders.

 

            Never climb ladders or scaffolding while carrying a load; always use a hand line.

 

            Scaffold erection is done by our scaffold crew only.

 

           

6.         Lifting

 

            Proper lifting methods must be used at all times. The lifting of objects more than 75 lbs. or over 10 feet in length by any one employee is prohibited.  Items that exceed these limits require additional help or mechanical aids.

 

7.           Knives

 

Pocket Knives are NOT to be used as a cutting tool where safer tools and methods are available; and, only as a last resort. Where pocket knives are required, the proper personal

protective equipment will be worn.

 

8.         Permits

 

            Authorization from the safety coordinator or superintendent, as well as a written permit, is required before entry into confined spaces, such as tanks, drums, pits or vessels.  Contact your supervisor prior to entering possible hazardous areas.

 

            SMC’s Lock Out/Tag Out procedures shall be adhered to at all times.

 

            Operations requiring the use of flame and spark producing equipment shall meet Hot Work Permit requirements.

 

            Only authorized personnel shall operate powder actuated tools.

 

8.         Vehicle Use

 

            Employees shall receive authorization by the safety coordinator or superintendent before they may operate equipment such as forklifts, cranes, man-lifts or any company vehicle.  To drive the company truck, you must have a valid driver’s license and submit to review of your driving record.

 

9.         Medical

 

            Report all injuries.

            All prescription drugs must be reported to the superintendent or safety coordinator.

 

 

 

 

10.       General

 

            The use of or possession of alcoholic beverages or drugs on any site is prohibited.

 

            Hazardous materials shall be handled and controlled per manufacturer's requirements.  Read all labels prior to the use of such materials and ensure the use of all required protective equipment.

 

            No employee shall be permitted to work alone in hazardous locations.  Employees shall work in pairs to offer mutual assistance in case of an emergency.

 

            Compressed air shall be set at no more than 30-psi and proper protective equipment worn for cleaning purposes.  Compressed air shall not be used to dust off hand, face, or clothing.  Contacting skin with compressed air shall be avoided at all times.

 

            Compressed gas cylinders shall be stored and transported in an upright secured position.  Caps must be on at all times when cylinders are not in use.

           

Smoking is permitted in designated areas only.

 

            Use the proper tool (example:  Torches are not slag hammers).

 

            Remove defective tools from service and return them to your foreman or tool room for replacement. Do not operate tags will be placed immediately.

 

            Barricades and signs shall be provided to protect all personnel from hazards. Barricade tape is allowed. Red is for high hazard locations, and will be tagged as to date, time, who installed, and reason for placement. Yellow tape is for low hazard locations. All tape will be installed in a manner consistent with the length of time it will be in place and the weather conditions. When the tape is removed, all parts will be removed, and properly taken care of. 

 

            All injuries shall be reported to your supervisor immediately.

 

            Employees are not allowed to have cellular phones or personal pagers on company property.

 

Employees are to conduct themselves in a professional and dignified manner at all times.

 

            Horse play and practical jokes will not be tolerated.
